Perhaps you’ve seen those huge tubs of protein in the supermarket and health stores and wondered to yourself, “What is that”? For many people, these protein supplements are for bodybuilders and athletes. While this is a correct assumption, protein powder is so much more than that. Protein is an essential nutrient the body needs to stay healthy. Our bodies experience a lot of wear and tear every day, even if you don’t exercise or lift weights. The body uses the protein and turns it into amino acids, which is then used to repair itself. Now, why would you need a lot of protein in the form of protein powder? Athletes and bodybuilders wear out their muscles faster than everyday people. In order to build muscles and strength, they must work out their bodies and essentially “destroy” it. By taking protein supplements, they can increase their protein intake without having to eat several servings of meat every day. While meat is a good source of protein, it is also an inefficient source. A few grams of meat can contain things like fat and cholesterol, which will be bad for the body.
Protein powder comes from whey. Whey is the natural by-product of the process of making cheese. Milk must first be separated into curds (solids) and whey (liquids). While the curds are turned into cheese, the liquid whey, which is packed with protein, can be turned into several other items like animal feed, but are most likely destined to be powder supplement. The liquid is purified and then dried into powder form and packaged for retail stores.
